Frenectomy in Danbury & New Fairfield, CT

A frenectomy is a simple dental procedure used to release tight or restrictive tissue that can interfere with normal movement of the tongue or lips. By improving mobility and function, a frenectomy can support proper speech, oral development, comfort, and overall oral health for both children and adults.

At Candlewood Dental Care, frenectomy procedures are performed by Lorraine Burio, DMD, who has completed advanced training in laser dentistry and has served families in the New Fairfield community for decades. Using modern laser technology, Dr. Burio provides gentle, precise care focused on comfort and efficient healing.

What Is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a procedure that removes or releases a frenum, which is a small band of tissue that connects the tongue or lip to the gums or floor of the mouth. When this tissue is too tight or positioned improperly, it can restrict movement and lead to functional concerns. Frenectomies are commonly performed to improve tongue mobility, reduce tension on the gums, or support proper oral development.

Signs a Frenectomy May Be Needed

A frenectomy may be recommended when restricted tissue causes functional or developmental concerns. Common signs that treatment may be needed include:

Limited tongue or lip movement
Speech difficulties or challenges with articulation
Difficulty breastfeeding or swallowing
Gaps between the front teeth
Gum recession near the front teeth
Denture fit issues caused by tissue tension

There are two different types of a Frenectomy:

Lingual frenum is located under the tongue and, in some cases, located at the tip of the tongue. This type of frenum can interfere with speech and proper tooth development. The lingual frenectomy is a common procedure in children that are “tongue tied” and is referred to a clipping of the tongue. After this treatment is performed, the tongue can usually be completely extended and fully mobile.
Labial frenum is located attached to the upper lip. If this frenum is attached too far back, it can create a gap between the front teeth and cause the gums to recede. Also, denture patients have their labial frenum removed to allow a proper denture fit.
